The face of May

Verses from the poem Amorgos by Nikos Gatsos, set to music by Manos Hadjidakis. Originally sung by Nana Mouskouri in the documentary GREECE, THE LAND OF DREAMS by Wolfgang Mueller-Sehn (1960).

This particular interpretation is by Αρλέτα (Arleta).

Ήταν του Μάη το πρόσωπο
του φεγγαριού η ασπράδα
ένα περπάτημα ελαφρύ
σαν σκίρτημα του κάμπου

Κι αν θα διψάσεις για νερό
θα στίψουμε ένα σύννεφο
κι αν θα πεινάσεις για ψωμί
θα σφάξουμε ένα αηδόνι

It was the aspect of May
the paleness of the Moon
a gentle stroll
as meadows stirred

And should you grow thirsty
we'll squeeze a cloud for water
and should you grow hungry
we'll kill a nightingale
